Our Front Door Makeover
Our front porch is one of my favourite places to sit with a glass of wine in the summer. Love that the front door is painted black but we started to notice that the black paint was easily scratched off. Underneath we could see red paint. When we installed our new door handle and lock we could also see the red that the new handle did not cover.
For some reason the black paint was not sticking very well to the door so it was time to repaint. I decided to strip the paint off of the door….not as easy as I thought it would be. The black came off nicely because it wasn’t really on that well anyway. Look at that paint bubble! But the red on the other hand gave me a headache! The black just peeled itself off…with the help of paint stripper of course!
As you can see the red paint is still there. Took a lot of scraping and chemicals to get the red removed! Be careful with paint stripper though. Use gloves and a mask ……. and don’t use a plastic scraper.
The door is finally ready to paint! First I primed the door with my favourite primer, Zinsser 123. Next for the black paint. The fun part! Took awhile to choose the right colour black. Did you know that there are many, many, many shades of black! Well there are. So it was time to consult Pinterest and see what the masses were recommending. Here is a picture of some of the most popular black paints out there on Pinterest.
We ended up choosing the colour in the top left called Broadway by Behr. You really have to hold up the colours chips next to your door and in different lighting. Some of the colours that I liked didn’t work because they ended up looking almost too purple or too blue next to my door.
So the next step is to actually paint the door. First remove the door knob and lock. Next tape off the window (unless you have a steady hand). Since my door has so many ridges or decorative detail I needed to figure out the best way to paint it without leaving too many streaks or brush marks. To do this I used a paint brush to paint all of the ridges first. And then used a small micro fiber roller to do all of the flat areas. You may need to apply two coats of the black paint.
The Painting Steps
Step 1 – Paint all of the vertical ridge details.
Step 2 – Paint all of the horizontal ridge details.
Step 3 – Paint any curved ridge details (I have some around the window).
Step 4 – Using a small microfiber roller roll out the flat parts of the door.
And there you have it! A perfectly painted front door. My winter wreath and my spring wreath are going to look great against my newly painted door.
And it looks great with my Halloween Decorations!
Thanks for stopping by my blog today and have a great day!
