Kitchen Renovation
Now that I have shared my mood board for our kitchen renovation it is now time to get down to the actual renovation. Up first is demo day! Don’t we all love a good demo day? It is so dramatic. Almost scary in fact. I keep reminding myself that it usually gets worse before it gets better! We learned this when we did our master bathroom renovation. In the end, after all of the mess and stress, you end up with an amazing new room.
Here are some pictures of the before kitchen. And a little video walkthrough of the before.
The old kitchen fit right under this window. Remember this window. It is going to look amazing in the new kitchen! Also note how the old cabinetry kind of sticks out in front of the window. Kinda weird right? We are going to fix that!
This is a view of the whole space. Basically this is the total back part of out house from one side to the other. That wall with the fridge on it is going to be removed completely.
This first picture below shows the patio door that will be removed. Can not lie. I was a little scared of doing this because I was worried that we would lose a lot of light. The second picture below is the little walk through butlers pantry that goes through to the dining room. We are closing off that doorway and making this space into a huge walk in pantry. Can’t wait!

Demo Day Is Here!
Here we go! The demolition crew is here! So scary but so exciting at the same time. We have been waiting for this renovation for a long time and it is finally here.
First up, destroy the kitchen cabinetry.! All of the appliances got moved to one side so they would be out of the way. There was no nice way to remove the old granite. They just smashed it all up into bits with a sledge hammer.
Everything gone! New view of the length of the house. As you can see the wall is gone! Yay. Our house does have a little jut out where that nice window is. Again, kind of weird. Why didn’t they make the back of the house straight across? It would have added so much more living space. This made it challenging to design the new kitchen. We had to work with what we had!
View from the other direction.
Flooring removal was a tough job! They smashed all of the ugly tiles which was very noisy and dusty. The old sub floor was also removed. So many screws! After that was done some large holes were cut into the floor for access to plumbing pipes. The sink and dishwasher are being moved so the plumbing needed to be moved.
The old pantry wall is removed! Yay! Not gone completely though. My mom claimed it for some much needed storage in their basement. We also needed to cut open the old pantry wall to access the plumbing to connect our fridge to. This wall will be the new home of the fridge and a small section of cabinets that will hold the microwave. You can see the hole where we will access plumbing for the fridge. Luckily there is a bathroom on the other side of the wall.
Once the wall was removed and the flooring was gone it was time to deal with the door issue. The patio door was coming out and a new regular door was being installed. Removing the patio door wasn’t too concerning but installing the new door was. We had to cut through some brick for this to be done!
Video Walkthrough
Here are a few more videos of the destruction. Its amazing what knocking a wall down will do. I didn’t think it would be as open feeling as it was!
So that’s it for demo day or should I say days. Actually the demo went on for only about 3 days. Not too bad and we thought wow things are going super fast! Little did we know that the putting everything back together takes way longer!
