Kitchen Renovation Vision Board
Hi guys! Our long awaited kitchen renovation has begun. You can’t believe how excited I am about this renovation. The kitchen in this house was one of the reasons I did NOT want to buy this house. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love this house. I just knew that the kitchen needed some major work to make it functional. Not only to make it functional but to transform the whole back part of the house into an open concept was going to be a big job!
Let’s have a peak at how the kitchen looked before we even moved in. These blurry pictures were from the real estate listing.
Traditional 80’s oak cabinetry that was actually pretty grungy (check them out here) once you got up close to look at them. And of course that standard bank of upper cabinets that kind of hang in the middle of the room over the peninsula blocking all of the views . That was the first thing to go! The new stainless steel appliances kind of helped a little….
The next big fix I did was to paint the kitchen in my favourite white paint, Simply White by Benjamin Moore. This made a huge difference and we lived with this white kitchen for three years until now…big kitchen renovation time!
The wall that the refrigerator is on will be removed to create the open concept through to the tv room. This whole kitchen is moving over to the side where the pedestal table is. The kitchen is currently in the middle of the house.
And now for my vision for this kitchen renovation! I still love an all white kitchen. I think white kitchens are so classic and will never be dated. I decided to go with a shaker style cabinet. There will also be lots of drawers! I currently have only one small section of drawers beside the fridge and it is only 12 inches wide! (see picture above) The cabinetry style was pretty much my easiest decision.
As soon as you pick your cabinetry they want you to choose the hardware to go with it. At first I chose a handle that was quite angular (see below). In the end I picked one that has a nice curve to it. I found the angular one a little too modern for me.
The winner is the Classic Comfort Subtle Surge by Berenson! Isn’t it just so nice with the bit of curve to it. I’m in love!
The flooring was surprisingly easy for me to pick out. I new that I wanted a luxury vinyl for durability since it is going in a kitchen. Also, our kitchen leads to our laundry room which leads out to the pool. There is always a lot of wet people coming in and out of the kitchen during pool season. I also knew that I wanted a light colour to keep my kitchen light and bright. It basically came down to two choices. Everest by Goodfellow and Harmony by Firmfit.
And the winner is the Firmfit Plank in Harmony. The large sample in the picture below. It is a little bit lighter in colour than the Everest. You can also see my nice orange hardwood that is throughout the rest of the house. Not to worry we have a plan for that! It will be refinished to match the luxury vinyl plank.
The new kitchen sink was an easy choice too. My design consultant Christina called me up one day and said that the Franco sinks were on sale at the distributor that they use. I popped over to take a look and liked the Franko sinks. The only decision was if I wanted the two bowls to be the same size or have one large and one small like my current old sink. I went with two the same size.
The hardest thing for me to choose was the quartz counter top. My designer really wanted me to go dark but I just couldn’t do it. I knew I was going to lose a lot of light when we removed the patio door and I didn’t want anything to make the space even darker. Here is a picture of my final three choices.
I ended up narrowing it down to these final two. I went back and forth for a couple of weeks before deciding on the lighter grey quartz called Noble Concrete Grey.
Another consideration to make when deciding on your quartz is the backsplash tile. In a few of the pictures above you can see a long white tile that I was considering for the backsplash. It had a little bit of grey colour in it. In the end I decided that it might look like it was slightly dirty.
In the end I went for a very traditional and classic large subway tile that had a little texture to it. Just in case you are wondering, I am not using those little tiny tiles you see on the sample board.
This is the final combination of quartz, luxury vinyl and backsplash tile. So hard to make final decisions on such an important and big renovation! I love this combination and I know it will look great in our new kitchen!
Then next item on the vision board would have to be lighting. Specifically lighting going over the new peninsula. There will be pot lighting in the main area of the kitchen but the lighting over the peninsula is where I get to buy something pretty! I really didn’t have much trouble choosing because I already had something in mind that I had seen on Pinterest awhile ago. I just needed to source the look in my area. I found it on one of the big box stores online shopping! Yay! Here it is:
Isn’t it petty? I’m just totally in love with it! Kind of traditional and classic and is going to look great in our new kitchen.
Last but not least we needed to choose a new gas range and range hood. When we moved into this new house Kevin and I really wanted to get a gas range. We had one in our old house in Calgary and absolutely loved it. But sadly we couldn’t get one for this old kitchen. The cabinetry was just too low and according to the building code it was not safe or legal to have a gas range. I was pretty bummed. Fast forward 3 years and I can finally have a gas range! I settled on a GE gas range and a GE range hood. Nothing too fancy although it does come with a griddle. Hopefully we will like it.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention the kitchen faucet. We are not buying a new one because our current one is only a few months old. It is a beautiful Moen Hadley faucet that I had to buy because the ancient faucet that we had just did not live to make it to reno day. A story for another time!
And there you have it! My vision on paper or should I say on my computer. I can’t wait to see everything installed in the new kitchen. I am soooo excited I can’t even stand it!
Stay tuned to see how this kitchen renovation goes and thanks for stopping by the blog today!
