Christmas is over and I find myself almost 3 weeks into the new year. How did that happen! My last post was in September so I think it is time to get posting. I thought I would share one of the first projects, the laundry room closet makeover, that I did in our new house. I decided to fix up the laundry room closet because it just wasn’t working for us. The laundry room is the main thoroughfare out to the pool and patio area so every one just dumps their stuff onto the dryer on the way by. Basically I needed more storage for crap. This is what it looked like before.
So as you can see the laundry room is totally not working at all. I called my mom over because she is my designated helper. In actual fact she knows way more about this sort of thing than I do. I think she will now be called the foreman of this project (and all future projects). Here she is preparing the tools!
Basically I just wanted to add a bunch of shelves for storage. Previously this closet had a closet bar to hang stuff but we really didn’t need that. So we ripped out the closet rod and the top shelf, measured up and figured out what materials we would need. Then off to the local hardware store we went. We bought several 8 foot lengths of 1 X 2 pre painted wood and several 8 foot lengths of 16 inch wide laminate shelves. And of course wood screws.
The plan was to get the store to cut the shelving and wood to the dimensions we needed but of course their saw wasn’t working. Hence my first lesson using power tools….so scary! But I did it with my mom’s guidance. She’s an expert at power tools.
Look I’m using the chop saw and I didn’t even cut off my finger!
Next we started to install the slats that would hold up the shelving. We used wood screws into the studs to make sure it would be strong enough to hold up the shelves.
Finally we cut the shelves and installed them. Looking good so far isn’t it?
I also decided to hang up some hooks for mops and brooms on the door. Once we had everything installed the closet was ready to fill up with stuff! And now it looks like this.
Ok let’s be real, it actually looks like this on a regular basis! To be honest this picture still looks tidier than it usually is. But I love the closet now. There is plenty of space for pool towels, overflow from the pantry (beer) and any other junk I want to hide.
Hope you enjoyed my laundry room closet makeover. Thanks for stopping by the blog. Please feel free to comment or share!
