The Best Ever Picture Hanging System-French Cleat
When we tried to remove the huge mirror from the boys bathroom we realized that it wasn’t really hanging on the wall at all! It was just jammed in between the walls. If you look closely in the picture you can see that the top right corner and the bottom left corner are jammed against the walls. It took a little bit of maneuvering to get it down.
Once it was down I saw that it was hung up by, or was supposed to be hung up by, 2 eye hooks attached to the back of the mirror (one on each side) and two nails in the wall (sorry, forgot to take pics). It would be practically impossible to line these up to hang the mirror. I guess that is why it was just jammed in between the two walls!
This mirror is super heavy! I noticed that there was a sticker on the back saying that it was from The Bombay Company. So I quickly realized that this was a very good quality mirror not to mention that it fit perfectly in the space. Just had to give it a quick paint job and figure out how to re-hang it!
While searching my Lowes for some way to hang this mirror I discovered the Hangman Picture Hanging System. I now know that this is actually called a french cleat. Guess I have been living under a rock or something because I have never seen it before.
I totally forgot to take pictures of the installation of the Hangman system on the boys bathroom mirror but I did take some pictures of the installation on my huge and super heave decorative mirror. I think this mirror is even heavier than the bathroom mirror but as you can see, the Hangman can support 200 lbs! The system does come in smaller sizes as well.
First thing to do is attach one of the aluminum cleats to the mirror using the screws provided. Fairly straight forward. I just made sure that it was centered on my mirror.
The next step is to attach the other part of the cleat to the wall. If there is no stud use proper wall anchors to secure it. The best part of this system is that there is a built-in level! This makes it super easy to make sure your mirror or picture is level and straight. Hold up the cleat, make sure the bubble is in the middle, then put a pencil mark in the holes to mark where the wall anchors or screws go.
And voila! Hang your picture or mirror. The two aluminum cleats slide together and the mirror or picture is hung. Best part is whatever you are hanging is now flat against the wall. It does not stick out at all.
I am confident now that these super heavy items are secure and aren’t going to fall off of the wall.

The two hangers on the back of the mirror were not supposed to fit on nails directly behind. Instead they were supposed to have wires specifically for picture hanging strung through them and then those wires attach to eye hooks or other type of hangers higher up on the wall. Yes, the wires would show. Probably the mirror didn’t come with hardware to hang it, and whoever hung it originally just guessed what to do.
