Hi every one! I thought I better tell you about my white painted kitchen in Calgary since I gave you a little tease about it in my back splash post. You can check out the back splash post here: back splash. Here is a picture of the maple kitchen cabinets that we had when we moved in.
It was beautiful when we moved in but after a few years it was time for an update. First we removed the back splash and then I decided to paint the cabinets. I had never painted any sort of cabinetry before ever! So it was a little scary. First I started with priming them. I can’t even remember what type of primer I used! Any good quality primer will do by. My favourite these days is Zinsser. I did do a lot of research about what type of paint to use on the cupboards. The consensus I found was to use a product called Advance by Benjamin Moore. It is a self leveling product and leaves a nice smooth finish. A little pricey but well worth it.
This was a big learning experience for me! The main thing I learned is that it takes A LOT of coats of paint to cover a maple cupboard door. I only used one coat of primer but I really should have done 2 coats. This is what the kitchen looked like after I painted and before the granite went in.
Doesn’t it look ten times better already? I also updated the kitchen faucet. The faucet was beautiful but that sink! Kind of ugly. You can also see in the picture that I really needed to get that back splash installed!
If you look closely you can also see that we had a raised bar at the island. Kevin and I decided that to modernize the kitchen we would remove it. By removing it, it made the island bigger which was really nice. There was also a bit of that ugly tile that needed to be removed first.
Then Kevin and my son Ian removed the raised bar area and the old counter top. It’s so great to have such handy men in my life!
We rested the old laminate counter top on island just until the granite was ready to be installed.
I was so excited for the granite to be installed and finally the day came! We installed the back splash soon after. See it here: back splash. The whole kitchen turned out great!
Finally I had the kitchen of my dreams! But then we moved…now I get to do it all over again in our new house!
Thanks for stopping by the blog today!
