Wicker Furniture Makeover
Five years after my first wicker furniture makeover it was time to spruce up the furniture again. I’m surprised the spray can paint job lasted as long as it did, but after 5 years this is what it started to look like. You can see that the paint was really starting to chip off.
We are currently using this furniture in our backyard by our pool. We really wanted to get some nice new patio furniture for the pool area but it was just not in the budget this year. Hence I needed to give the furniture another makeover. This time I am going to use primer and some actual paint meant for outside. I’m also going to use a paint sprayer for the first time! So Excited! My mom actually bought the sprayer and is kindly letting me us it for this project. And of course she is helping me too! This is the one I m going to use. The Wagner Flexio 590.
Gotta say this paint sprayer is amazing and so easy to use! I’m kicking myself for not getting a paint sprayer sooner. Painting my kitchen cabinets would have been sooo much easier!
First I set up my paint spraying station outside up against my fence. Since I had never used a paint sprayer before I didn’t know how much spray was going go everywhere! I stapled some large sheets of plastic on the fence and used plastic sheets and several drop cloths on the patio stones.
Ready to paint! But first I used a metal brush and gave the furniture a good scrub to loosen and remove all of the flaking paint. Then I started with a nice coat of my favorite Zinsser primer. This paint sprayer is amazing! It got into all of the nooks and crannies of the wicker.
I also gave two little tables and an Adirondack chair a coat of primer as well. My boys Ian and Ben made these in work shop class in high school and they are perfect for the back yard.
And finally I cleaned out the paint sprayer, which was surprising easy, and started painting the wicker furniture with the extertior paint. I chose the Valspar Duramax exterior paint (the same brand I used on my front door) in the color Curio Gray by Sherwin Williams. It is a little lighter than the previous spray paint color I used before. I just love how they turned out! And hopefully with the primer and the exterior paint on them they will last in this humid Ottawa air.
I added a little pop of colour to my outdoor space by painting the two little tables with the Valspar Duramax in the colour Parakeet and the Adirondack chair in the colour Show Stopper.
Finally, I bought some nice new outdoor cushions to replace the old super flat ones. I chose some nice bright yellow, green and red cushions and some lovely flower patterned seat cushions for the wicker furniture to finish off the look.
I think I can live with this set up for another year or so until we can afford some new patio furniture.
This is what the whole set up looks like including my nice red and green umbrellas that I love. Sorry but I forgot to take a before shot. Oooops!
This little pool side seating area will have to do for awhile. Hopefully next year I will be able to get the patio furniture that I have had my eye on.
